I first started the “Make it Practical” series as a way to make connections between research, theory, and practice by summarizing academic articles and sharing my takeaways for practitioners in the global development and philanthropic sectors. I have not posted a summary in a while, although there are several drafts inside my OneDrive. However, I have found the past few months have drawn me toward other ways of making concepts, theories, and ideas more practical - or at least accessible - to me and folks I work with.
In this post, I am sharing a new mini-zine I created about incorporating principles of care and consent into facilitation. I gave a presentation/mini-training about this as part of Yarrow Global Consulting’s Feminist Action Week on May 6th. You can watch the full session here.
I think this newsletter is evolving to not only include text summaries of academic articles and research, but also “non-traditional” ways of illustrating the practical implications of concepts and theories that can be somewhat nebulous. The power cartoons and zines are also examples of that evolution.
Care and Consent in Facilitation
I created this mini-zine in response to a request to deliver a training about feminist facilitation. Knowing that I cannot cover all aspects of what makes facilitation “feminist,” I decided to focus on the concepts of care and consent, which are, in my opinion, fundamental to feminism.
This mini-zine is dedicated to a friend and peer mentor of mine, Erin Gar-Yun Andriamahefa, who taught me to view consent as a a wide-ranging principle that can apply to many, many aspects of our lives.
